About Barb Gonzalez & The Simple Tech Guru
In the past ten years (or so) technology has become more complex. TVs and home theaters look and sound better than ever, and technology has made life easier in countless ways. Yet, many people are still just getting by and many more just give up and don't get the most out of what today's technologies have to offer. They read instructions and reviews and don't understand them. They feel helpless about the very devices they use everyday!
Technology that we use should be simple. No consumer should be left behind! It is our goal to find ways to make technology accessible and easily understood for those who want to use the new gadgets and the TV that they turn on every day, but feel inadequate when faced with making their devices work.
It is our mission to simplify technology so people can buy, setup and use their home entertainment, TVs and gadgets, getting what they want from the experience.
If you are one of those people who find technology difficult, and are still confused by the explanations on this site, we want to hear about it! Contact us at info at home-electronics-survival.com.
Barb has been involved with media since childhood. From learning about stereos and being trained to see and hear picture and sound quality, to working for more than a dozen years in film and TV production for the major studios. When a series of events led her to work for the Good Guys retail electronics store, it was about to change the direction of her career. Customers wrote letters thanking her for explaining their new purchases in a simple manner and understanding what they needed to know so that they could use their computers, digital cameras and home theaters. When customers started making appointments to have her sell them their new devices, Barb saw her true calling.
"Great,' she thought, "I have a talent for making technology simple, what can I do with that?" She used her talents in cartooning and simple communication to write her first book, "The Home Electronics Survival Guide." The book was snatched up by libraries and people who were novices to technology as well as those who worked in the consumer electronics industry. Barb was dubbed the "Simple Technology Guru" and it seemed to stick.
Monster Cable, a company dedicated to consumer education, hired Barb to use her talents in explaining their complex accessory technologies. While at Monster Cable, Barb wrote everything from websites to brochures, to videos and more. She was also the "eyes of the consumer" on packaging and P.O.P. signage. Her second book, "Home Theater Made Simple," is a joint effort with Monster Cable expanding on the original book to create a complete reference guide.
Today, Barb is working with companies to simplify their messaging of new technologies-- to explain new features and new devices. From user manuals to websites, Barb knows how to take insider knowledge and make it understandable for the average consumer. She has written for trade magazines like "Dealerscope," and consumer magazines and websites like "e-Gear," "Home Theater Magazine," and "Digital Trends." She has been a guest on national and local radio talk shows as well as internet radio shows. Barb does workshops and is a speaker on panels (including CES panels) where she creates controversy with old-school manufacturers, as she is a hold-out for making technology simple for everyone to understand.
Currently, Barb is working on a book to help readers see what is possible in whole home entertainment and home networking. To fulfill her mission, this new website has been expanded to include others who are making it simple on the internet with their blogs, tutorials and services.
